Food Processing Technology Laboratory Facilities

FPT laboratories are equipped with basic and modern technological instruments and designed to facilitate students with their technology practical and research activities. FPT undergraduates and researchers have the opportunity to work with these instruments and acquire valuable practical hands-on experience. FPT owns and manage three laboratories.

Food Processing Technology Laboratory

The Food Processing Technology laboratory comprises the following collection of equipment related to different food processing disciplines, including dairy processing, beverage processing, cereal processing, food packaging, and sensory analysis.

  • E-nose
  • Coffee roasting machine
  • An automatic Soxhlet extraction unit
  • Double barrel extruder
  • Spray dryer (50kg)
  • Moisture analyzer
  • Kjeldahl distillation apparatus
  • Kjeldahl distillation apparatus
  • Automatic Karl fishers
  • Visco meter (dial)
  • Rotary evaporators
  • Vacuum packaging machine
  • Spectrophotometer
  • Water activity meter

Microbiology Laboratory

The laboratory consists of the following collection of equipment to facilitate students with their practicals and research activities related to microbiological analyses.

  • Bioreactor
  • Fermentation vat
  • Chiller
  • Distiller
  • Freeze dryer
  • Incubator
  • Autoclave
  • Laminar flow
  • Oven

Fish and Meat Processing Laboratory

Once completed with equipment, this laboratory will facilitate students with their practicals and research activities related to Fish and Meat Processing. We are currently awaiting the purchase of equipment for this laboratory.

Mini Plants

The Mini plant concept is one of the important concepts introduced by FPT. According to this concept, all the machinery and equipment related to one particular food process are installed in one place. Practical exposure and experience acquired through working in a mini plant will enable students to get familiarized with the actual industrial environment. Also we believe that these mini plants will attract research and development projects of various food processing industries in Sri Lanka.

Currently, the Beverage Processing Mini Plant is installed in the FPT laboratory premises and is used to perform research activities by the undergraduates and researchers.

The following six Mini Plants are also proposed by FPT.

  • Grain processing
  • Fish and meat processing
  • Oil and legume seed processing
  • Fruit and vegetable
  • Dairy processing
  • Bakery and confectionary processing
