The Faculty of Technology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura strives to introduce necessary skills in the scope of technology to its undergraduates with a mission that is based on maximizing the future potential of the nation. The Department of Science for Technology was introduced as part of the Faculty of Technology, University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2020 and is recognized as the only department that caters to all students of the faculty despite their different avenues of study. Thus, the Department of Science for Technology is placed at the center of the academic scope of the faculty, holding an important place in laying the foundation of the future of each and every student who will develop their skills in order to become a successful technologist.
The Department serves the purpose of imparting core knowledge and skills to students needed to become a technologist and training them to have attitudes and habits of mind needed to become a global citizen. Undergraduates are introduced to advanced concepts in the areas of Mathematics, Statistics and Basic Sciences while also developing and improving their personality and soft skills. The Department mainly offers modules in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Statistics. In the first year of their degree program, the students focus on these Basic Sciences and develop analytical and scientific skills needed to apply them in their respective fields. The Department believes that at the end of the completion of the respective degree programs the students would be equipped with a set of skills both professional and academic, preparing them to fulfill the national requirements of the country once they step into employment.
The Department of Science for Technology consists of a teaching staff that is highly experienced and qualified in different areas of expertise ranging from Science-based subjects to Management-related subjects and also English language skills. The staff is dedicated to providing necessary instructions and support to students not only during the learning and teaching sessions but beyond the classroom too. This dynamic team is always ready to extend assistance to its learners.
In addition, the Department has taken steps for the overall development of the skills of the students. Thus, the course units are structured to meet not only the academic skill development of students but also to consider the development of their personality and life skills. Course units in the areas of Management, Communication Skills, Ethical Conduct, and Personality Development are to be followed by the students. Subjects related to Basic Sciences, Mathematics, and Physics are taught further, beyond their first year, within the degree program. Students also receive an opportunity to engage in technology-based projects that enhance their creativity, project management skills, and critical thinking.
